Pasagshak River State Recreation Site
Tent and picnic spots are located all along the bank of the
Pasagshak River. This is an
extremely picturesque spot as the campground lies right where the Pasagshak
empties into the Pasagshak Bay. The
crash of the waves on the black sand beach sure beats the noisy airport at
Buskin River. Green hillsides
surround every direction protecting the campground from wind.
Songs of numerous birds fill the air and occasionally we could hear
eagles nesting in the trees on the other side of the road.
At one point we spotted six soaring overhead, riding an updraft higher
and higher into the clouds. What
this campground lacks in location and amenities, it certainly makes up for in
terms of beauty and tranquility.
To find the campground from Kodiak city, go south on
Rezanof Drive. At the Buskin River
Bridge Rezanof becomes Chiniak Road. From
the bridge, go 25 miles and turn right onto Pasagshak Road at the fork
Continue 8.5miles down Pasagshak road.
The campground is a grassy strip of land along the river just before in
empties into the bay.
The sites are not really demarcated.
There are six fire rings and four picnic tables spread across the grassy
river bank. Numerous tents could be
pitched all over. A seventh fire ring with the fifth picnic table lies down the
road about a tenth of a mile. Parking
for approximately 8 RVs can be found along the road on the far side of the
toilets. There is no cost to camp
here. There is also no water here.
Water can be obtained from the river, but we recommend filtering it.
On of the most eye-catching things about his campground is
the wild iris that grows along the roadside right next to it.
Just past the campground the road becomes narrow and windy.
Looking down on the rocks below in the bay Claimjumper spotted pigeon
guillemots.
