Water Taxi Between Haines & Skagway

There are several water passage options between Haines and
Skagway. We chose the Water Taxi
because it will stop for wildlife viewing along the way and we were not in a
rush to get to Skagway. Although a
little bit more expensive than the Alaska Ferry, the wildlife we saw was well worth the
few extra dollars we spent.
The ticket center for the Water Taxi in Haines is located
above the small boat harbor restaurant/bar.
Follow the Haines highway into town toward the water.
Turn left on Front Street and follow it around until you see the big
white water taxi sign above the brown building. Tickets can be purchased on board the Water Taxi as well.
The boat features comfortable passenger seating in one
large indoor cabin. The captain
sits at the wheel in front of the cabin and watches for wildlife. When he spots anything he takes the boat over for a closer
look. There is a large viewing deck
up above the cabin accessible from a stairway to the stern of the boat.
The trip costs $22 one way and $35 round trip.
The boat departs Haines at 9:30 am and 3:45 pm and Departs Skagway 10:45
am and 5:00 pm. The trip takes
about one hour. Click here for
contact info and reservations.
During our trip the captain pulled the boat near shore to
point out eagle nests and seals resting on the rocks. The route up through the inlet is amazingly gorgeous.
Waterfalls cascade down in braided veils on both sides of the boat.
Sunshine burst through cloudbanks illuminating snowcapped peaks.
Be careful to
keep hold of a railing when moving around on the Water Taxi.
Many larger boats go by during the trip as Skagway is a popular
destination for many huge Cruise Ships and the Alaska Ferry.
The wake from one Alaska Ferry sent a lady who was not paying attention
sprawling across the deck.
During this trip we met Diane from
British Columbia. Diane teaches business
education at a high school in B.C. She
was on her way to meet her friends in Skagway.
Their group had reservations to hike the Chilkoot trail the next day.
Diane was kind enough to introduce us to her team of climbers at Mountain
View RV Park later that evening.
