Port Chilkoot Campground and RV Park
While not the prettiest campground in Haines, this private
campground cannot be beat in terms of convenience. When hikers and bikers find out about showers, there is
little to hold us back from getting clean.
And the fact that there are laundry facilities really makes for an ideal
rest stop.
To find this campground, head east on the Haines
Highway through town until just before it reaches the docks.
Take a right on Mud Bay Road. Port
Chilkoot Campground is on the right side of Mud Bay Road about a quarter mile up
the hill. Since we arrived by ferry
we were greeted by different shuttle services offering to take passengers
wherever they wanted to go. We
hopped a shuttle from the ferry docks out to the campground.
The tenter sites are just an open area lined with trees
around a parking lot. There are no
partitions, so tenters can camp as close as they want to one another.
The site cost is $8 per tent. There
are another dozen sites for RVs that cost $18 for full hookups down to $12.75
for no hookup. For contact info, click
here.
We had the pleasure of meeting up with a
group who had shared the same ferry with us into Haines.
Thomas, a backpacker from Denmark, had met up with Kagan, a backpacker
from Tucson, Arizona. These two had
met Raine and Helen, two more backpackers from California.
The group explored Haines together for a day, and then went their
separate directions on quests for adventure.
