Mountain View Campground & RV Park
Skagway is quite small, so they make the most of what
little space there is for the massive number of RVers that need a rest spot.
This campground caters almost exclusively to RVs.
There is very little tent camping space and they will turn away tenters
when the spots fill. But his
campground is very quiet, as it is located a ways away from the bustle of the
harbor and highway. It also offers
much better wind protection as it nestles right up against the mountainside.
To find Mountain View, take Broadway from the Harbor
through town. Turn right into the
campground at 12th street.
The campground features restrooms, showers, water and
public telephones. Most of
the sites have picnic tables and fire rings.
The facilities are handicap accessible.
The RV sites cost $24 and include water and electric hookups.
Tent sites cost $13.
Claimjumper and I did not stay here.
We visited mostly because we wanted to meet a group of women who had
reservations to hike the world famous Chilkoot Trail.
Carol, Diane, Cathy, Shelly and Leslie from Fort Nelson, British Columbia
were joined by their friend Shirley from Thunder Bay, Ontario to make the
ascent. They had given themselves
four days, and had to make reservations eight months in advance to use the
trail. The Canadian and American
governments have agreed to limit usage to let only 50 people begin the hike each
day.
Reservations are made for each of the campgrounds along the way. For several of the people in this group, it would be their
first backpacking trip. Their trip
sounded like so much fun we nearly offered to be their sherpas!
