Captain Cook State Recreational Area

When we travel to Kenai and Soldotna we were fortunate to have our long time friend Mike to guide us.  When we asked him to show us some cool campgrounds, he took us to a group of parks at the end of the North Kenai Highway.  The Captain Cook State Recreation Area offers both day use as well as overnight camping opportunities.

To find the Captain Cook Recreation Area, head north up the Kenai Spur Hwy from Kenai.  This turns into the North Kenai Hwy.  You will pass through an industrial area known as Nikiski.  Keep heading north and eventually you will begin to see signs that announce the recreation area, as well as the specific names for the different camp grounds in the area.

The nice thing about these camping areas is that they are much more spread out, private and quiet than many of the campgrounds on the Kenai peninsula.  People come out to this campground to get away from it all.  It is so far away from many of the populated areas that many of the locals forget it even exists.

Stormy Lake -

This area features a swimming beach, covered picnic areas, toilets, water, and a boat launch.  There are no overnight camping facilities, and there is no day use fee for this area.

Bishop Creek -

This area features twelve walk-in camping sites and toilets.  Campers share a communal parking lot.  The cost is $10 per night.  Watch for moose!

Discovery Campground -

53 campsites in all, with each having its own parking space.  A camp site here also costs $10 per evening.
