Upper Chatanika River

State Recreation Site

This is another terrific campground along side the Chatanika River. The views are gorgeous and the setting remains tranquil. Woods provide some sense of privacy even though the park service was able to accommodate 23 different sites in this small area.

Upper Chatanika campground is at mile 39 of the Steese Highway, on the left side of the road when you are headed northeast from Fairbanks.

This campground is well maintained and features water, toilets and sites with picnic tables and fire pits. There is also drive in river access a short distance from the campground. We tried to spot fish swimming up the river but our attention quickly turned to gathering a few of the sparkling mica speckled stones that are so common in the area.
